Steel tools
Section weight and paint area
Typical UK sections. Mass per metre and painted area are rounded; check critical values against the Blue Book.
Plate, flat and round bar weight
Steel at 7850 kg per cubic metre.
Tonnage from floor area
Early-stage estimate when you have a floor plan but no member schedule.
Paint quantity
Litres from area, dry film thickness, volume solids and losses.
Bolt length, hole size and spacing
Normal clearance holes and EN 1993-1-8 minimum spacing. Grip is the total thickness of the plies.
Fillet weld size and weight
Throat is 0.7 times leg length. Weight includes 10% for reinforcement.
Stair geometry check
Approved Document K limits for rise, going, pitch and 2R + G.
Guarding height
Minimum barrier heights from Approved Document K. Openings must stop a 100 mm sphere where children may be present.
Rafter length and rise
For a symmetrical duo-pitch portal frame.
Running dimension generator
Type the gaps between witness lines. You get the running values that sit at each point, ending at the overall length.
Unit converter
Common steelwork conversions.
Concrete pad bearing pressure
Check a base plate / pad size against the ground bearing pressure. Uses factored axial load only; moments should be checked separately.
Steel grade and yield stress
Characteristic yield stress fy and ultimate strength fu for common structural grades to BS EN 10025.
Notched beam (coped end)
Simplified shear capacity check for a notched beam web to BS EN 1993-1-1 §6.2.6. Check also block shear and local buckling for deep notches.
Weld classification (fatigue)
Detail category to BS EN 1993-1-9 for common weld types. Gives the characteristic fatigue strength ΔσC at 2×10⁶ cycles.
Fire resistance indication
Indicative fire rating for unprotected steelwork by section factor Am/V. Add intumescent or board to reach R60 or R90. Always confirm with a fire engineer.
